Open Air Museum Back Pack

Dog for Size, Back Pack by Liz Terbolizard

Recently, the Headlands Center for the Arts experimented with a program called “Desire Trails” which I participated in.

I experimented with incorporating walking with a mix of folks I knew and didn’t know with my initial exploration of the Headlands as a potential subject matter.

It was a fun day out, and well organized by the HCA, but think the walking tour as an experience wants to be a narrative, an adventure, and more a externally shared event. Trying to involve folks in my thinking as it was being freshly minted was a good thing to try. As art or professional practice, not so rich.

Walking the line of being socially engaging and having a practice where part of the end result is human engagement is muddy.

I’m going to get dirty.

Maria! I read about your walk/talk and it sounds wonderful. Hopefully you’ll have a chance to iterate on this, and do it again soon. I’ll be leading a group of people in an “experiment” next week that has a similar expectation of reaching an ah-hah moment and somehow sharing it. I have a feeling that I’ll be getting dirty too.

Thanks, Rachelle. Would be great to hear more about your experiences!

Finding the right point to involve others- not to mention in what manner (walk? talk? blog post? end result for this idea only?) is interesting. For the Headlands, as with any place, it requires refinement to get it right. It was my first foray up there. I’ll write about what happens next.
